Imagine what would happen if you opened your email inbox and clicked onto every spam link offering you prescription only medicine without a prescription...
In order to find out, an investigation into the truth behind the spam was conducted.
The study involved 65 members of the public who volunteered to donate all their spam emails to the security teams at Pfizer and the MHRA. These 'spam donors' come from all walks of life, age groups, and locations across the country.
Almost a third (32%) of spam donors received emails offering a cocktail of prescription only medicines, from life-saving to so-called lifestyle treatments. These emails were analysed to determine the sender's origin. Linked websites were visited and a variety of medicines were purchased and then tested in a laboratory.
By combining this with knowledge of the spam donors' state of health, we were able to collect a number of case studies which would allow us to assess and illustrate the serious potential risks which people could be taking with their health.
The information on the website is intended for UK residents.
